Understanding Veterinary Radiology

Radiology encompasses a few different types of technology that allows us to see beyond your pet’s skin and fur to their internal systems. This can be very helpful when your pet has suffered an injury, ingested something they should not have, or if you are looking to confirm a pregnancy. A physical and visual exam can only tell us so much about your pet’s condition.

X-rays are one version of radiology that allows us to take still images of your pet’s bones and other dense tissues. It uses a low dose of radiation to capture these images, so it is not suitable for use on pregnant pets or other delicate tissues.

Ultrasounds are another version of radiology that provides us with real-time images of your pet’s soft tissues. Instead of radiation, ultrasounds use a high frequency soundwave to penetrate your pet’s tissue, which is harmless for pregnant pets and developing fetuses.

Both forms of radiology are completely non-invasive and pain-free. However, because X-rays require a completely still pet to capture a clear image, we may need to sedate your pet for the duration of the X-ray process. We will work with you to ensure that your pet’s experience is as stress-free as possible.
